Good Ol' Fashioned Compassionate Christian Conservatism

The Disgrunted Chemist (there's someone you don't want to fire from the post office!) has a disturbing post up about a meeting he attended recently, which was also covered by the Washington Post (and noted below by Karl):
Tonight, Commandante Agi and I attended a meeting of the College Republicans at the University of California, Irvine. It was a panel discussion; the main issue was whether or not Muslims in the United States are doing enough to distance themselves from terrorists and to support the War on Terror. As you'll see, the conversation soon diverged from that.
You should check out the whole post, which is a sad commentary on the state of American tolerance and the fervor with which some right-wing hypoChristians so easily buy into the Christianity vs. Islam meme. Below are just a few of the quotes the Chemist transcribed from the meeting:
"I don't care if you're a liberal or a conservative, a Republican or a Democrat. These people, these Muslims, are out to destroy us all. It's called jihad, plain and simple."

Speaker: "After that chant, we're going to talk about just who the Prophet Mohammed was."
Guy behind me: "He was a camel driver!"

"the Muslims protest against anything and anybody who doesn't see it their way"

"On September 11th, we were attacked because we are a Christian nation."

"Islam is an evil religion."

"go back to Mecca, buddy!"

"Radical homosexuals, as part of an art project, desecrated a picture of Christ - they smeared feces all over it. I didn't get offended by that. I mean, homosexuals hate God; that's why they're homosexuals, am I right?"

"go back to the Middle East"

"Before you came to this country we had an organization here called the Klu (sic) Klux Klan. And the good people of America rose up, stood up for themselves, and defeated the Klan. And that story should be a warning to all the Muslims in America."

"USA! USA! USA!"
Geez, you'd think with the overt threat of the destruction of the one true religion, more of those College Republicans would be signing up to fight against that evil religion. Either they don't believe the one true religion deeply enough, or they've decided their job is to convince all us poor heathens to defend their religion for them.

Yet the Pentagon and the State Department are both spending lots of time, energy, people and money on language and cultural training, etc., for diplomats and military officers to work with Muslims to win the Global War on Terror.

Given the political judgment of the UCI College Republicans, however, it's difficult to see why.

It seems that money would be better spent educating Americans that tolerance and diversity are good things.
