Can you compare the recruiting quotas from the last three years? You'll see that the Army was moving the goal posts.
phinky-
The recruiting quota for the current fiscal year (80K) is the same as FY-05.
This year, however, they have back-loaded it, with almost half of the recruits expected in the last four months (i.e., in the first eight months, they got over half).
Following high school graduations in late May/June, the summer months are traditionally the busy season for basic training. But they'll still have to work very hard to make the quota this year.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that Our Nation is At War. With effective National Leadership in the Global War on Terrorism, we would routinely be EXCEEDING the quota to the point that the Pentagon would be asking Congress for the authority to enlist even more of the well-qualified applicants lining up at recruiting stations.
Instead, they're taking everyone who, even barely, meets the minimum criteria. Through 2004, military recruiters could choose from among qualified applicants, selecting those most likely to succeed in our military.
That's no longer the case.
It just goes to show you, if you Officially lower the goals, then you can advoid bad news.
My prediction is that the yearly goal of 80,000 recruits will be magically lowered to match what they actually recruit, so to advoid bad news.
