Where are the Republican Rangers and Pioneers?

Well, the New York Times has published another article on a Real American going to Iraq. Here's the previous article from June 2004, when she first enlisted. The earlier article mentioned other potential enlistment prospects, but there's no update on them.

Conspicuous in its absence from the articles is anything about our national leadership. These families clearly haven't raised or contributed significant sums to our governing party; otherwise, the articles would have said so.

Operation Yellow Elephant salutes these brave soldiers and their families. We also thank the potential recruits interviewed for Stepping Forward. We wish them all the best.

But that's not enough. Where are Our Leaders? Where are their eligible relatives and friends?

Why haven't they Signed Up? Why won't they Lead?

More to the point, Why Should We Follow Them?

Damn, if you need two books to study for the ASVAB, stay home.

gus-

I'm e-mailing Tom Bowman of the Baltimore Sun (tombowman@baltsun.com) about this.

I'll also send a pro-forma e-mail to the NY Times (letters@nytimes.com) but doubt they even monitor that mailbox.

I'm almost positive that the recruiters are going through their files for the last couple of years to identify people who were not accepted in the past due to a low ASVAB score, and asking if they are still interested.

I am quite certain that there's a story out there on the individual in the 2004 article, whom I respect, who had trouble with the ASVAB. If she didn't make it back in 2004, I'm almost certain she was at least contacted by a recruiter within the last six months.

I have nothing against such a person, but with all respect, the military of today is not for her.
