The Mother of all Yellow Elephants

Meet Andrew Jones, UCLA '03, President and Founder of the Bruin Alumni Association, which seeks to "take back" UCLA from, well, whatever, in the great American tradition of the free exchange of ideas.

As the student President of the Bruin Republicans [College Republicans @ UCLA], he organized and led a pro-war demonstration in 2002 and a pro-war counter-demonstration in 2003. [OT: Don't forget the nation's first affirmative action bake sale.]

But Andrew also encouraged healthy discussion and debate, inviting major heavyweights such as then-counter-terrorism expert [in early 2003] L. Paul Bremer III, who soon led the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq and won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his accomplishments.

Of course, we've heard a bit more from the book-promoting L. Paul Bremer III this week; the former counter-terrorism 'expert' admitted having been clueless about the insurgency. [I am not making this up.] What a jerk! Almost as bad as Robert McNamara. If you've chosen to remain silent, L. Paul, then just shut up. Great timing, Andrew. [OT: Please freep Bremer's book. We know it sucks; just say so.]

But let's not forget Andrew Jones. He even "built a moribund club of 90 into a powerhouse of 320." Andrew, is that a battalion?

Well, Andrew, you appear to be a healthy heterosexual and you're certainly under 40. If you really want to Support The War and Support The President, and presumably Support The Troops, why aren't you leading them in Iraq? You are even offering students $100 to tape professors critical of the war in Iraq; can't you support the war in the most honest way you can: on the front lines?

Ask Andrew yourself. Click here. And while you're at it, Ask The Question of the Bruin Republicans, too.

Update: On second thought, that's enough. Andrew, whatever you do, please stay a civilian.

I recall the Affirmative Action Bake Sale. One of the most overtly racist displays I have ever seen. It nearly set off a race riot on bruin walk.

I have another one for your list - this guy and his cronies set up a huge display comparing METCHA to the NAZI's and Hitler. They even made a big banner of the METCHA symbol with a giant swastika over it. That also nearly set off a race riot.

In 1991, California Gov. Pete Wilson gave the commencement speech at the UCLA law school. It was right after he vetoed AB101, a law banning employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The entire front row was planted with demonstrators who stood up holding protest signs while the TV cameras caught it all. This could not have been done without the participation and encouragement of faculty.

Something like that could not happen today. UCLA has lost its social conscience. It is now just a typical corporate clone factory.
