Blue Stars on Capitol Hill - Updated

Many of you have asked, so here's the info. However, our principal concern is whether our national leadership establishment, both our governing party and the loyal opposition, personally know any enlisted servicemembers or officers at Lieutenant Colonel (O-5) or below. Also, whether those who support the war have encouraged their eligible relatives and friends, their circles of influence, if healthy, heterosexual and 42 or under, to consider volunteering for military service.

A small number of Members of Congress have adult sons in the military, almost all of whom are officers. We know about these:

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has one son, Jack, age 20, at the Naval Academy. His youngest son, Jimmy, age 18, is joining the Marines. [Sorry, Time, but you should have held off until he finishes boot camp.] We thank the NY Times for some additional leads, mostly Republicans. [OK, loyal opposition, please Step Forward.]

Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) has one son, Sam Bond, who is a Lieutenant in the Marines and has served in Iraq. There may be another, also an officer. Further details welcome in the comments.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) has a son, Duncan Duane, a Marine Lieutenant, who served two tours in Iraq.

Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) has a son, Alan, who spent a year in Iraq as a Captain in the Army National Guard. Wilson has three other sons in the military/ROTC.

Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) has a son, Perry, a Marine Lieutenant, served a year in Iraq as a combat engineer.

Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) has a son, William, an Air Force Major, who served in Afghanistan as well as Gulf War I.

Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) has a son, Brooks, who is a Sergeant in the Army and has served in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Bosnia, Kosovo and South Korea.

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) has a son in the Navy.

There's a female Democrat from the West Coast (probably California) with a son in the Navy. Details, please.

Thanks to our commenters, here are some more. We'll be asking their offices for more details:

Congressman John Kline (R-MN-2) has a son who is a Black Hawk helicopter pilot in Iraq. Rep. Kline is a Marine Corps veteran and supports the war. We thank Kline pere and fils for their service to our country.

Rep. Charles Taylor (NC-11) has a son who has served in Iraq.

We thank all of them for their service to our country.

Any others? Please let us know.

not on the current topic, but I see an oportunity for a recruitment drive on Daily Kos right now. Take a look at this and see if you don't think that a recruiting party couldn't meet up with these fine young men as they board the busses on August 4th. Maybe we can redirect one or more of them from Hartford, CT to Paris Island, SC!

Congressman John Kline (R) from the 2nd District in Minnesota has a son who is a Black Hawk helicopter pilot in Iraq. The guy is a former Marine himself and gung ho on the war... his opponent is whistleblower Coleen Rowley; the Dems think she is concentratin too much on the war issue and are backing off of her race. She could use a little "Ned Lamont-like" help out here. She is a great candidate and doesn't like to take PAC money.

Rep. Charles Taylor (NC - 11) has a son who has served in Iraq at least one tour of duty (maybe two).

also, it was told to me (I didn't hear it) that Taylor said that sometimes you just have to fight for the oil at a Town Hall meeting.

I've got to get a digital camcorder to take to stuff like that!
