IDYLLOPUS DOES YELLOW ELEPHANT

From one of our readers, Idyllopus:
Frag Dolls Not Content with gaming bloodshed.

No, the Frag Dolls, ,so-named for…

frag /frag/ n. & v. · n. 1 number of kills. 2 a fragmentation grenade. · v. 1 to eliminate other players in multiplayer shooters (fragging).

…weren’t content with video game kills and bloodshed. As pointed out in my prior post, PTSD (maybe death) is finding out war isn’t like it was in the army’s hot fantasy combat video games, they decided the thing to do was to serve as recruitment bait for the army, get some dollars from the army for taking on the boys and girls, men and women, the army hopes to sign on through its “War is Fun and Gaming Development” program.

These women are ripe for Operation Yellow Elephant, y’think?
f
The website caption for this picture reads, These glass cube things make a cute “plink” sound when you flick em with your fingernail. Yeah, and real fragmentation grenades go BOOM real loud. But that’s not so cute.

And it’s not real sexy either.

Nor does it happen on a computer monitor.

P.S. Man, I hope I don’t go and get the kick ass Frag Dolls all mad at me.

From General and Bushamerika.
It is quite worthwhile to click on this link. The people running this site just alerted us to their existence. Welcome aboard, the Yellow Elephant Express! Hope to see you more, here.

let me say this slowly so maybe your tinfoil covered head will get it.

A PERSON CAN ENJOY PLAYING VIDEO GAMES AND STILL BE ANTI-WAR AND ANTI-BUSH.

Are some of them pro-war and pro-Bush? Maybe. But making assumptions because they enjoy playing games is stupid. I know pro-Bush gamers and I know anti-Bush gamers. Just because a person enjoys a violent and/or war simulating video game doesn't mean they support blind warmongering by our Chimp In Chief. Yet another of your logical fallacies.

You know what? I like playing violent video games. Know what else? I've been agaisnt the war from day #1 and was at the vigil in Indianapolis the night the bombinb started. I was at the anniversary protest this year. I worked my ass off in 2004 for Democratic candidates who were against the war.

Go ahead, call me a chickenhawk too.

Hell yeah! Seeing those frag dolls just might make me get off my fat lazy ass and quit playing video games. So, if I sign up to join the military, will I get some action from those pro-war hotties?

Jasonb,

Are saying that the military doesn't think that their combat simulations ARE good recruiting/training tools? WTF do you think they are for then? The more realistic the training, the easier it is to pull the trigger on a real person.

And use a spell-checker. You come across like you're foaming at the mouth. I also like the way you insult people and them challenge them to insult you. That's really darling.

Cain't be a chicken hawk if ye ain't a hawk at all.

Jason B., if you believe that America's Army is just another video game, you've drunk the kool-aid.

America's Army is not just any other video game. It was developed as a recruitment tool and from everything I read it's intended also to be a training tool targeted for teens who immerse themselves fully into their games. Its origin is in a 1997 National Research Council report by Zyda and Sheehan pushing game-based simulation which convinced the army to sink 45 million to creating the MOVES institute, which initially developed America's Army.

At its surface "America's Army: Operations" seems like nothing more than a game made to take advantage of the recent success of games featuring realistic military tactics, but in looking into the matter many interesting bits of information are discovered. According to the official web site for "America's Army," Operations is actually designed to be a recruitment tool. If a player does exceptionally well at the game they may actually receive an e-mail from an army recruiter. This certainly changes how propaganda works in that it's not a one-way flow of communication. Being contacted directly as a result of using the propaganda makes the communication two-way and far more effective. This actually may have a psychological effect on certain players because encouraging army enlistment because of the person's abilities harkens back to how guidance counselors and family may encouraged them in the past.

....

As the quality of games increase the industry becomes more respectable and a more apparent vehicle for propaganda. For now, however, video game propaganda may be highly underestimated despite the industry's current acceptance as an art form by a wide range of people. It is because of this that video game propaganda will prove to be most effective.

The Frag Dolls don't just game because they enjoy it. They are professionals. They are paid by the Army when they are are taking on challengers in the America's Army game.

They are recruitment bait.

Gamers who persist in believing that America's Army is just another game, who refuse to acknowledge that the military has deftly and concertedly pursued them and are using gamers to even train each other with their participation in these games, have let their dedication to the sport cloud their vision. And if they are against the war in Iraq it is certainly a serious conflict of interest.

I wasnt' specifically talking about teh America's Army game (yes I know it is a recruiting tool and that's way over the line).

I was talking about Ms. Tinfoil's characterization of anyone who likes violent video games as a chickenhawks.

As for the misspellings, I'v enever been diagnosed but I do seem to suffer from some mld dyslexia when I type quickle. I wish blogger had a built in spell checker in its comment forms, but alas it does not.

And I still want someone to explain to me how just enjoying a video game (not just that one, any violent video game) makes someone a chickenhawk. It's a total logical fallacy.

But I suppose that I am not welcome here even though I've been against this war as long as the rest of you. To some of you I don't fit in your Perfect Vision of a liberal.

Ah well, there's plenty of othe rgood blogs around. I'll let the crazies gather here and complain about video games and boy scouts while I go and work on REAL issues.

Apparently video games are the cause of a decrease in violent crimes as right-wing bloggers prominently note. I wonder if video games are the cause of recruiting woes too?
