GRANNIES ARRESTED FOR ENLISTING

f

Looks like a posse of grannies decided to walk boldly where Young Republicans fear to tread! Seeing the drop off in recruitment, they decided to join only the recruiting officers called the cops and had them arrested.

9:00 am Wednesday, July 13, 2005 U.S. Army Recruiting Station, 2303 E. Speedway, Tucson, AZ

The Raging Grannies want to enlist in the U.S military forces to make possible the immediate return of all U.S. service personnel, and to set an example of what REAL diplomacy can achieve. We would meet with our counterparts in Iraq (women) and come to a mutual agreement of how best for Iraq to regain its own independence, as all U.S. troops, bases and corporations leave their country.

The Raging Grannies are angry about the U.S. maintaining a Permanent War Economy, using military might as the U.S.’s primary tool of Foreign Policy.

The Raging Grannies are angry about the U.S. military recruitment system that lies to young people about the reasons for needing more people in the military. We are angry that our young peoples’ lives are at risk for reasons that have nothing to do with defending our country.

The Raging Grannies are angry that the U.S. is using and has used quantities of Depleted Uranium weapons in Iraq, and other places in the Middle East, jeopardizing the health and environment for 4.5 billion years (providing a source for birth defects, leukemia and other adverse health effects for our own service personnel as well as innocent citizens).

The Raging Grannies are angry that the U.S. is building 14 permanent bases in Iraq. We are angry that U.S. policies are driven by fear-mongering and growing losses of First Amendment Rights. We abhor the use of torture by U.S. forces against detainees.

The entire GOP is proud to wave that flag and run the other way. Isn't that great.

This fits in well with my idea for how to deal with the situation in Iraq: Withdraw "coalition" forces to Iraq's borders to stop the influx of foreign fighters. On the way out, arm all the women.

The Raging Grannies are great!

I certainly hope they greeted the military servicemembers inside, just to let them know that it's not personal; they're protesting U.S. policy instead.

Always recruit new allies by showing everyone you care.

Dennis do you have any stats for wounded Gulf War veterans? Every one of the cowards I contact who bother to reply claim to be wounded vets of GWI. I don't think it's possible. Unless maybe they were fragged.

In response to Merlallen:

I don't have the exact figures in front of me, but according to Chalmers Johnson in The Sorrows of Empire, when you take into account all those who developed illnesses and disabilities as a result of their deployment (according to the Defense Department's own figures), the casualty rate rises to about a third. If you want to check it out, the relevant portion of the book is on page 100.

I often find myself at public meetings. I love it when the Raging Grannies show up. You can't help but love them.

This story is up on CNN.com right now:

Nancy Hutchinson, spokeswoman at the Army recruiting headquarters in Phoenix which oversees Tucson's recruiters, said people who disagree with the war should be contacting their legislators instead of bothering recruiters.

"They need to direct their frustrations at people who have the power to change things," Hutchinson said. "Recruiters don't make policy and they can't change policy. They have a job to do and they are following orders."

Whether by coincidence or some strange Francophile's whim, the story directly underneath bears the headline:

Pentagon wants to raise age limit for recruits
